Rensselaer's School of Humanities and Social Sciences hosted their annual Symposium and Exhibition for video game development and technologies on Saturday the 26th of April, 2014. This 10th installment of the annual event was sponsored by Vicarious Visions games studio and showcased PC/mobile games designed by various university teams. Included among the 46 project submissions were representatives from across the region, including Champlain College, NYU and RIT.
Awards were distributed among a choice selection of 20 teams which were judged by well-known professional game designers. This year’s Rensselaer-based winners successfully ended the streak of previous years’ exhibition honors which were dominated by visiting dev teams.
First place winner of the Vicarious Visions Student Challenge was awarded to Team Pentavera, headed by lead designer Jaron Kong . Jaron first conceptualized the top awarded game called “Hangeki”, which means “Counter-attack”
Jaron stated “It's inspiring to see others notice what we have done. I hope to see Hangeki evolve into something that can support a competitive community of players.” Level designer Jon Ota agreed and described the win as refreshing. “It feels great to see what we’ve made be appreciated by top-level developers.”
Foremost inspired by classic arcade shooters, Hangeki is designed to appeal to a wide-ranging audience while providing challenging gameplay. Story arc writer, Damian Cross, said “The game offers thrilling action set in an immersive sci-fi world. We’re excited to bring the Hangeki experience to even more players on our upcoming summer promotional tour.
When discussing the near future of Hangeki and its tour, Jaron expressed that “this will be an exciting opportunity to witness gaming enthusiasts enjoy and explore the great work that this team has done.”
Pentavera will tour beginning the end of May 2014 and offer free live demo play at each appearance.
