Capital Resorts Group celebrates the grand opening of its newest Capital Resorts Club destination, 84 Main, located on Main Street in downtown Kennebunk, Maine, this week. 84 Main resort features spacious one and two bedroom suites with separate living areas, hardwood floors, state-of-the-art kitchens and private balconies.

The seaside communities of Kennebunk (http://www.kennebunkmaine.us/), Kennebunkport (http://www.kennebunkportme.gov/Public_Documents/index), and Arundel (http://www.arundelmaine.org/), also known as the "Kennebunks” in Maine have been enjoyed by New Englanders as a quiet getaway for many years. The new resort provides a unique vacation opportunity to those who love visiting the beautiful state – and also to those who have yet to experience all that Maine, particularly the Kennebunks, have to offer.

Former president George H.W. Bush helped to make Kennebunkport known to most of the country, as it has been a Bush family retreat for many years. Today, New Englanders and tourists from all over the world enjoy many amenities of this coastal spot and it’s neighboring towns, Kennebunk and Arundel.

Denise Clavette serves as Executive Director of the Kennebunk-Kennebunkport-Arundel Chamber of Commerce.

“84 Main will bring in people that will have never been to Maine – and that is exciting,” Clavette said of the new resort, which opened Monday, April 21. She noted the beautiful view of the quaint downtown area that resort guests will enjoy.

“I have lived here most of my life, and a lot of people do come to Maine for their vacations. Depending on the region that you go to, you could be on the beach, and within an hour you could be in the mountains,” Clavette said of the state’s appeal to tourists.

“It’s just a beautiful area. We have it all here, from high-level resorts, to small bed and breakfasts, from small town businesses to professional services – everything you could want. You get all of that, and traffic is not a major issue,” she added.

Just 90 miles north of Boston, The Kennebunks sit on a corner of Maine where lobstermen still command the sea. This makes the area especially of interest to tourists because of its working waterfront community, Clavette said. Working fisherman are continuously coming in and out with fresh lobster and seafood, and tourists may even board a working boat to see it all in action. Visitors can experience much history in the old-world fishing village of Cape Porpoise, as they watch lobstermen unload their catch and take a cruise from the pier on a working lobster boat. Lobster pounds, fish markets and restaurants are famous for fresh seafood.

“The beauty about Maine is that it’s so diverse in its offerings. There are lakes, rivers, a lot of outdoor recreation available, freshwater to saltwater fishing, day hiking and the experience of every season,” she said.

While tourism peaks in the warmer seasons due to the beach-goers, Clavette said Maine is a year-round destination. In fall, the area is bursting with brilliant colors. In winter, if skiing is not your thing, you can cuddle up by the fireplace and watch a gentle snowfall from one of the many charming inns or bed and breakfasts.

“Contrary to what people may think, we are open year-round. You get four real seasons. You experience a real spring, and summer at its best without a lot of humidity. In the fall, the foliage is second to none,” she said.

What mainly brings people to The Kennebunks?

“Clearly for our area, it’s the beaches of all different types. There are long stretches of sandy beaches with a lot of activity, fresh seafood, and many events throughout the year, from our big signature events, to the small community events,” she said.

While beaches are a major draw in warmer weather, the area’s many small boutiques, art galleries and restaurants again welcome guests at any time of year. Shoppers may want to combine a visit to The Kennebunks with a trip to nearby Kittery, where dozens of outlets and factory stores offer plenty of bargains, shop owners greet their visitors like long-lost friends, and the nostalgia and charm of New England's old-world villages take guests back in time.

“There are many old, historic homes,” she said. For those looking for that rustic, old-Maine feel, the town boasts a lot of antique businesses. “A lot of our downtowns in general are very unique with their businesses and restaurants,” she said.

Those looking to get a feel of local traditions will find plenty of opportunities to do so. As early as 1872, tourists were coming to the area via the railroad to swim and canoe in the river, and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the seaside villages. The Kennebunks have never lost the “old Maine charm.” Historical buildings along the river are still home to gift shops, galleries and restaurants. The picturesque Goose Rocks Beach is enjoyed by walkers of all ages.

“Tourists may also branch out and visit the blueberry fields,” Clavette said, noting the Nature Conservancy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nature_Conservancy) Blueberry Barrens, known locally as the Blueberry Plains, with 1,500 acres of nature trails and blueberry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blueberry) fields.

Nearby Arundel is known as a shipbuilding area, where guests can pick up on fascinating history of the maritime world. In the early 1600s, Europeans explored and settled along the Kennebunk River. They harvested the abundant timber, and built a thriving shipbuilding industry. While the shipbuilding industry has since been replaced by new developments, the history of it all is still alive and well.

For those considering a visit, Clavette says, “Give us a try, you’ll be back!”
