It all started when Reed’s high school counselor told him he wasn’t smart enough for college – so he joined the Army. When his parachute didn’t open during a jump with the US Army Rangers, Reed was told by the experts that he was lucky to be alive, but that he’d never walk again.
“I remember asking God how I could do anything when I have nothing to offer. I wasn’t smart enough and my body was broken … That’s when I had a dream of a robotic suit that would help me learn to walk and assist me when I needed to exercise. I had a vision and, after a few years, I found people to help me. Together we built the LIFESUIT Robotic Exoskeleton, which paralyzed or disabled people can use to stand, walk or exercise,” Reed said. “We want people to be able to use this technology at home, but right now it’s still in development and only available at hospitals for an hour at a time.”
They Shall Walk, the non-profit organization behind the LIFESUIT, was founded as the North Seattle Robotics Group in 2001 and, in 2008, Reed realized something needed to change. Working day and night not only meant that he was burning the candle at both ends despite his failing health – it also meant that the company was entirely dependent on him each and every day.
