Austin, Texas - April 22, 2014 - In the three months since their January debut show at the Belmont in Austin, TX, the group New Car Caviar: A Jamgrass Tribute to Pink Floyd has drawn fans across Central Texas from multiple genres, from psychedelic rock, to bluegrass, to jam band. While the six-member group officially considers itself a Pink Floyd tribute band, their bluegrass-inspired instrumentation has landed the group in a country niche more than once, from headlining the Yonder Mountain String Band aftershow in March alongside Bobby Bones of the Bobby Bones Show, and being chosen as one of Austin's top local bands to play Jeff Foxworthy's Redfest over Memorial Day Weekend. The group hopes to keep from being labeled as purely a bluegrass band, however, by creating memorable shows that stray from the standard concert formula. On May 2, 2014, the band will host a Wizard of Oz-themed party, featuring the Dark Side of the Moon album in its entirety, complete with a custom light show, projections, and dancers from the San Marcos-based burlesque group Quaintrelle.
Band founder and guitarist Michael Boyd, previously of the Austin Phish tribute band A Live One, and drummer Enzo Loechel, of the jam band ToasT, bring a strong jam influence into the familiar music of Floyd, while the string section (made up of Randal Robledo on mandolin, Joshua Terry on violin, and Matthew Meldrum on upright bass) and classically-
trained lead singer Amy Boyd bring an element of sophistication to some songs, and a strong country feel to others.
"The ballads lend themselves to a gorgeous, theatrical style, the strong rock pieces get people on their feet with [drummer] Enzo's heavy dance beats, and the more bluegrass-styled pieces give me a great excuse to stop hiding my Texas drawl," Amy explains. "The freedom we get by not being a straight tribute band is pretty amazing -- we get to play some of the most loved music that's ever been made, but we still get to stretch our own creativity. Fans stay after the shows to tell us how much they love the fresh sound, and we love hearing that."
