New Brandon Hall Group Report Tracks Latest L&D Trends

C-Level Executives Take More Control of L&D Spending and Strategy, Which are Now Highly Aligned to Corporate Performance and Business Goals

April 24, 2014 - PRLog -- Brandon Hall Group (http://www.brandonhall.com/) today released State of Learning and Development 2014: Coming of Age, (http://go.brandonhall.com/state_of_learning_and_development_ES)which shows that learning has become more business-centric and performance- and competency-based and is taking center stage as a mission-critical part of the enterprise.

The report, based on an online survey completed in January and interviews with corporate learning organizations of all sizes, reveals that learning strategies are highly aligned to business goals in nearly three out of four organizations.

L&D spending -- long seen as a cost center relegated to HR departments or business-unit line items – is now more likely to be controlled from the C-Suite than by HR and business unit leaders, according to the research. C-suite executives are also primarily responsible for setting learning strategies in a majority of organizations.

Other key findings in the report, authored by Principal Learning Analyst David Grebow and VP/Product Development Claude Werder, include:

·      Performance-based and competency-based learning is becoming the predominant approach to learning as L&D aligns with business strategy and goals. 76.1% of organizations link learning objectives to corporate performance goals to at least a moderate extent, and 43.5% to a high or very high extent.

·      Organizations plan to focus most heavily on learning delivery that appeals to their Millennial workforce. Millennials strongly prefer more personalized, just-in-time learning methods, and organizations are responding. The delivery methods most often cited for more use in the next 12 months were online learning modules (65.2% of organizations), social collaboration and learning tools (50.6%), online performance support (49.8%), online videos (49.6%), and coaching and mentoring (48.8%).

“Our research clearly shows that performance, competency, and results are the leading drivers for L&D and are also most often used to judge effectiveness of learning programs,” Brandon Hall Group CEO Mike Cooke said. “More companies are evolving into Learning Organizations, with an established culture of learning aligned with business goals and corporate performance. There is more work to be done, but L&D is clearly part of the strategic fabric of organizations now. We look forward to drilling deeper into the research and providing more insights in further reports.”
