Film Screening: "Umunthu: An African Response to Homosexuality in Malawi"

April 24, 2014 - PRLog -- BGSP will host young Malawian filmmaker Mwizalero Nyirenda this Friday evening, April 25th, at 7:30 at BGSP to show his film "Umunthu: An African Response to Homosexuality in Malawi (http://bgsp.edu/pdf/Umunthu%20Poster_PDF.pdf)." This will be followed by a discussion of attitudes towards homosexuality in Africa, forces affecting these attitudes, the role of religion, of American-European influence and aid in Africa, neocolonialism, African nationalism, and other related topics.

Umunthu : An African Response to Homosexuality in Malawi is a first person documentary. The film unpacks the controversy surrounding homosexuality in Malawi and investigates the interplay of tolerance, politics and culture through the lens of "Umunthu" - a Pan-African philosophical concept of humanity, often defined in the phrase "I am because we are". The documentary frames a discussion that is not based on an imposition from outside, and is not also fueled by resistance to foreign forces. Rather, it uses local concepts and values to discuss the matter in an informed and sober manner. This opens space to begin shaping a genuinely African response to the topic of homosexuality in Malawi.

The film is 30-minutes long and will be followed by discussion with the filmmaker.
