Holiday Bookings Barometer of World Cup Fever

This year’s holiday bookings are a clear barometer of how much the nation loves footie – but that Brits also haven’t got much faith that England will make it beyond the first round!

April 24, 2014 - PRLog -- This year’s holiday bookings are a clear barometer of how much the nation loves footie – but that Brits also haven’t got much faith that England will make it beyond the first round!

Online travel agent Holiday Hypermarket (http://www.holidayhypermarket.co.uk) has reported a massive 98% increase in bookings for the week after the World Cup, compared to last year, with customer feedback confirming people are delaying their trip abroad until after the event.

But while England supporters are staying put during the week that The Three Lions go head to head with Italy (on 14th June), there is a 46% increase in bookings the week after indicating that fans don’t have much faith that their team will make it through (and play on Tuesday 24th June). They’re busy snapping up the exceptional bargains on holidays during these weeks as well as the weak Euro.

And contrary to a belief that ‘football widows’ might plan a girly escape during the World Cup, females are also staying put – with a 23% year on year decrease in women booking a holiday as the lead passenger between 12 June and 13 July.

Once the global event has ended, Brits are heading to popular European destinations – in order of popularity – including Greece (with Zante, Corfu, Rhodes and Crete the top destinations), Turkey, Majorca, Spain (mainland), Mexico, Cyprus, Tunisia,  Bulgaria, the other Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.

Commenting on the trend, Kay Dixon from Holiday Hypermarket said:

“While we saw some skews in bookings around the Royal Wedding and Diamond Jubilee, when Brits opted for street parties and to watch the events on their home TVs, it wasn’t as significant a change as this – just showing the level of support for football over the royals! We really have never seen such a huge increase on bookings straight after a world wide event.

“This year’s figures clearly show that as a nation, whether we’re from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, we want to stay on home ground and enjoy watching the World Cup with friends and family.”

Almost six out of ten (59%) of those who are taking a holiday just after the World Cup said that it was because they always took a holiday around this time, but decided to push it back slightly so that they can be sure to catch the action.

It seems enthusiasm for the World Cup declines with age, as 56% of bookings during the World Cup are for those aged 45 and over.

Regionally, Scottish passengers have dropped by 71% - is this because they are stopping home to cheer on any team but England!
