The intent of this wreath buyer’s guide is to clarify and provide you with the essential information you need to select the ideal wreath.

Part 1: Choose the Right Wreath Type. How to choose the right type of wreath for your needs.

The popularity of the wreath has never been greater than they are today. Until the recent past most people considered the wreath to be a Christmas holiday adornment. Displaying a wreath on a front door has been popular during the Christmas season but now we see them for all occasions. They exceed the welcome mat and are a warm way to greet guest, friends, and family. Wreaths are a fairly low cost way to enhance your home for every occasion or celebration. Relatively no décor element is as easy to switch from season to season or holiday to holiday as is the wreath.

There are many different types of wreaths but we will examine what we regard to be the primary four types.

    1.   Silk & Artificial Wreaths

    2.   Natural Dried Floral Wreaths

    3.   Preserved Dried Floral Wreaths

    4.   Real & Fresh Wreaths

1.   Silk & artificial wreaths are very popular and are tolerant to any environment. They have longevity and resist weather the best. Silk wreaths are made with silk and usually other artificial materials. Sometimes wreath makers will utilize grapevine and other strong natural materials for the base of the wreath.

2.   Natural dried floral wreaths as the name expresses are made of naturally dried flowers. If properly dried they can hold up well but they are recommended for indoor use or covered/protected exterior door use.

3.   Preserved dried floral wreaths are made with preserved dried flowers. They are made from many different materials such as Boxwood, Eucalyptus, Salal, Echinops, and more. For best results display away from sunlight and where humidity is low. Recommended for indoor use or if displaying outdoors you will want it to be covered and in low humidity and free of moisture. Many of the preserved dried floral wreaths are died and can bleed if exposed to moisture.

4.   Real & fresh wreaths are the favored wreath for the fall and winter holiday season. One reason they are favored for the cooler fall and winter seasons is that they last longer when the temperature is cool. They are made from many natural materials such as Fraser Fir, Balsam Fir, Boxwood, and many more.  A fresh wreath can be hung inside or out but you will want to know more about the type of fresh wreath you have purchased. Depending on the type of material used they can have different issues. Some cannot be exposed to extreme temperatures, sunlight, moisture and other elements can affect different types in different ways. Some as with the Firs can burn when moisture sits on them and the sun bakes it off. Burning means it will leave brown sports where the moisture resided. Most fresh wreaths in idea conditions can last a couple of months.

Which wreath is best for my situation?

Exposed location:

Best suited is the silk or artificial wreath. Most of them will maintain well under exposed conditions.
 Alternatives are the fresh and real wreaths (best results if temperature is cool)and wreaths made of strong natural materials such as grapevine wreaths, strong grass wreaths, twig wreaths and others made of durable natural materials.

Outdoor covered areas:

  If moisture or high humidity exists it is recommended to stick with the above mentioned wreaths but you could try some others if the conditions are mild.
 If the sheltered area is completely dry most wreaths will work. This may take a little trial and error before forking out a lot for that one special wreath. I recommend hanging a wreath that is close to the end of its useful life and if you know your wreaths monitor the difference in deterioration from inside to outside. Then if the wreath lifespan is not altered much buy your more lavish wreath and enjoy.
