This new book takes a look at the All-America City of Pharr, which was incorporated in 1916 and holds precedence as the heart of the Rio Grande Valley. Author Romeo Rosales Jr. shares the story of how the late Henry Newton Pharr, a sugarcane grower, engineer and manufacturer, along with his partner John C. Kelly, founded the city for their interest in establishing a sugarcane empire. Images show the development of Pharr over time. Many of these images were culled from the Pharr Memorial Library, the University of Texas-Pan American Special Collections Department, the Museum of South Texas History and local residents’ private collections. Combined these photographs create a never before published look at the city’s history. Rosales Jr. shares the stories of Pharr’s industry and how Pharr benefitted from the fruit and vegetable boom. This boom led to the introduction of the railroad, great feats in civic progress and success in international commerce. The book also includes the area’s modern history. Pharr is the only city in the state of Texas to be designated as a “Triple Crown City.” Pharr’s feats include the Preserve America City, National Main Street City and All-America City awards. Rosales Jr. states, “I hope my book will serve as a reference, guide and stepping stone for future history books on the city of Pharr.” Join the Author for a Book Signing!
