By: Unsung Heroes Out of the over 3,000 NGOs working in Cambodia today, this book showcases a selection from different areas, both geographically as well as areas of focus. From basic human needs such as food, water and shelter to healthcare, education, sustainable business and the arts. These are the projects that are helping Cambodia recover from the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge. Projects located around the country have been identified for doing exceptional work as volunteers in Cambodia. While many of the NGOs have offices in the main centres of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, much of their work includes outreach into rural and often inaccessible areas. The feature stories on each volunteer or project are inspiring as well as educational. Volunteers, and potential volunteers, will learn more about the complexities and ethical dilemmas involved in volunteering abroad, as well as how to avoid them. As a Volunteer Guide, it simplifies researching options by providing direct links to good projects. It also outlines practical tips and ethical considerations. Co-authors Lee Anderson, Kerryan Griffin and Shawna Hartley developed the book to celebrate the exemplary work of those volunteering in Cambodia as well as to raise awareness and funds for the projects. “We selected the best projects for volunteers in Cambodia, based on a diverse criteria and it was very difficult to choose between the many, many good projects,” stated co-author Shawna Hartley. Projects range from large multinational organizations to single person start-ups. A grassroots approach as well as Khmer involvement and following best practice NGO policies was of a paramount importance in selecting which projects to include. Plus being able to reveal the truth about NGOs; where they go wrong, how to get it right; and how volunteers can support good ones and avoid the bad ones. ‘UNSUNG HEROES CAMBODIA: People and Projects Making a Difference’ by Lee Anderson, Kerryan Griffin and Shawna Hartley is a not-for–profit book printed in Cambodia by 3d Graphics. “It’s a beautiful book and is selling well in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap,” reported William Bagley of Monument Bookstores. It contains information and contacts needed by those wanting to volunteer in Cambodia. The book provides perspective on the work has been done to date by volunteers in Cambodia, and what still remains to be done. It provides insight on the diversity and nature of NGOs and seeks to inspire more volunteers to come to help fully aware of the complexities involved. “There are so many unsung heroes in Cambodia and their stories deserve to be celebrated,” UNSUNG HEROES CAMBODIA: People and Projects Making a Difference’ by Lee Anderson, Kerryan Griffin and Shawna Hartley is available at select bookstores worldwide, on Amazon and their website www.unsungheroes.net.au End
