By: R.W. SPEAK Boutique Did you know that according to Advance Care Planning Canada: · 86% of Canadians have not heard of advance care planning · less than half have had a discussion with a family member or friend about healthcare treatments if they were ill and unable to communicate · only 9% had ever spoken to a healthcare provider about their wishes for care · over 80% of Canadians do not have a written plan · only 46% have designated a Substitute Decision Maker – someone to speak on their behalf if they could not communicate Despite countless news stories in the media about the stress and doubt families face when making life and death decisions or even the strife created when family and friends don’t agree with major medical decisions made by the primary caregiver, people are still scared to talk about Advanced Care Planning, or don’t even know where to start. And let’s face it, it’s not exactly a discussion that people have over a drink or dinner with family and friends on a Friday night. If you are a caregiver or a substitute decision maker, wouldn’t it offer you peace of mind to know that the person you are responsible for looking after has prepared an advance care plan? Author and Speaker Jane Blaufus understands the fear and hesitation both the caregiver and the person being cared for face, “When someone is nearing the end of their life it’s just not the time to start the discussion, and at that point it may not even be an option. It’s about having the conversation when they are of sound mind and body.” states Jane, “Organizing and compiling documents, arranging for such things as living wills, powers of attorney for medical and financial affairs, having a properly drafted and current will, etc., helps to significantly reduce anxiety, fear, and confusion and most importantly allows family members the time and energy necessary to attend to their loved ones in their final days.” To help families get the conversations started you can read Jane’s Blog: www.JaneBlaufus.com/ To book Jane for an interview or to provide commentary on financial, family or planning topics, please contact: Rania Walker Phone: 416-258-8953 rania@sparqstreet.com @raniaspeaks Jane Blaufus is an Author, Professional Speaker and Personal Finance Coach.
