McCormick & O’Brien, LLP, announces that C. Mark Laskay has recently joined the firm as a partner to spearhead the firm’s financial services, investment funds and capital markets practice group.

Mr. Laskay’s practice will focus on a number of key areas related to the global financial markets, including:

(a) the establishment and operation of investment funds and related asset management vehicles, and the representation of portfolio managers and other investment fund professionals;

(b) the structuring and trading of over-the-counter swaps and derivatives and other trading, hedging and investment instruments and strategies;

(c) the representation of borrowers and lenders in connection with project finance and asset-based lending facilities, with a particular emphasis on activity in Latin America; and

(d) other structured financial products, such as leveraged leasing facilities, insurance-linked securities (e.g. catastrophe or “cat” bonds), and loan warehousing and securitizations.

Mr. Laskay has handled a variety of transactions involving assets and markets in the United States and around the world, including in Europe, Latin America and the BRICS countries.  He has represented a diverse group of participants in the public, private and over-the-counter financial markets, such as managers and sponsors of hedge funds, private equity funds and funds of funds, proprietary trading companies, investment advisers, commodity pool operators (CPOs) and commodity trading advisors (CTAs), sponsors of and investors in infrastructure projects financed in the international credit markets, financial as well as commercial end users of swaps and other risk hedging products (e.g. banks, hedge funds, special purpose financial vehicles, power generation and distribution companies, and users of jet fuel), broker-dealers and financial exchanges.

Mr. Laskay’s experience in financial services and capital markets spans more than twenty years.  He began his legal career in Bogota, Colombia advising major U.S. and European multinational companies regarding various foreign investment activities in Latin America.  During this period he became well versed in civil law concepts and developed a fluency in written and conversational Spanish, including formal Spanish legal terminology.  He was previously with the New York offices of Akin Gump, Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft and Hunton & Williams, andco-founded Benedetto Laskay LLC, a boutique financial services law firm based in New York.

Mr. Laskay is a member of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA), and actively serves on the association’s Derivatives and Structured Finance Committee, Securities Regulation Committee and Private Investment Funds Subcommittee.  He is also a member of the New York City Bar Association, the International Association for Quantitative Finance (IAQF) (formerly IAFE - International Association of Financial Engineers), and the Professional Risk Managers International Association (PRMIA).

Mr. Laskay is admitted to practice as an attorney in New York State and the Republic of Colombia (holder of the tarjeta profesional de abogado), and is admitted to practice before the federal courts in the Southern District of New York.

Mr. Laskay obtained his Masters in Law (LL.M.) in International Business Law, from the University of London, a Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.), from the University of Texas School of Law and a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) in Accounting and Finance, from Baylor University. In addition to his fluency in written and conversational Spanish, he has experience with French, German, Portuguese and Hungarian.
