Mycle Brandy Begins Walk at Providence Portland Medical Center

Four-Time Stroke Survivor Walks from Portland Ore. to Portland Maine, Raising Money for Stroke Victims

PORTLAND, Ore. - April 14, 2014 - PRLog -- Surrounded by members of the Providence stroke team, 63-year-old Mycle Brandy will kick off his 3,780-mile walk across America at Providence Portland Medical Center. Brandy is a four-time stroke survivor. His mission: to educate people about stroke warning signs and what people can do to prevent stroke. “Every year, nearly 800,000 people have a stroke. That’s one every 40 seconds.” said Brandy. “But in most cases, it’s preventable by lifestyle changes such as exercise.” The leading causes of stroke are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and smoking.

Before setting out on his trek, Brandy plans to visit Providence Acute Rehabilitation Center (http://oregon.providence.org/our-services/p/providence-acute-rehabilitation-center/), where stroke patients receive intensive physical, occupational and/or speech therapy. Providence Portland is among 20 hospitals Brandy will visit during his journey to help inspire stroke survivors. “In moments of pain and frustration, it’s tempting to give up. But recovery is possible,” said Brandy. He’ll walk from Portland, Ore. to Portland, Maine, planning to finish his cross-country trek in mid-December.

Starting at 11 a.m. on Tuesday April 15, this walk will begin at the entrance to Providence Cancer Center at Providence Portland Medical Center. The Cancer Center entrance is on the west side of the PPMC campus – accessed via NE 47th Ave.

This is Mycle’s fourth walk across the U.S. He has previously trekked from California to Washington, D.C. in 2010, from San Diego, Calif. to Seattle, Wash. in 2011, and from Maine to Miami in 2012. This walk will take eight months. Plans are to complete at Maine Medical Center in downtown Portland, Maine on December 13, 2014.

This is Mycle’s longest walk attempted to date; he hopes to raise $1 million in donations along the way.He will walk through Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire & Maine.
