April 14, 2014 - PRLog -- Throat spasms or Achalasia along with Acid Reflux is attacking Baby Boomers in record numbers. It’s time to make some health adjustments and get back to a normal life with your personal wellbeing .

There seems to be a major increase in the number of individuals being affected by sudden throat spams or what is clinically called Achalasia. This is a symptom of your sphincter muscles in your esophagus that allows your food flap for a lack of a better word, to open up and allow food and even your saliva to be swallowed and pass into your stomach.

Acid reflux is also seeing a dramatic increase in cases among the aging Baby Boomers as well. So, what is all this latest increase trying telling us? Are we being attacked by some medical or food warfare? In short, yes!

It is no big secret that we Americans have it better than anyone on the planet and we have become so spoiled in our lifestyles that we have become obese and junk food junkies. We can consume more calories and fat grams in a single meal than other countries do in a whole week. It’s no wonder that we have adopted symptoms that no other countries are experiencing.

Achalasia is an incurable condition that affects 1 in every 100,000 and is best descibed as the failure of smooth muscle fibers to relax, which causes the sphincter muscle to remain closed and it fails to open when needed. That is according to doctors and statistical data. Well, personal I live in a very small town and the ratios of affected individuals is significantly higher. So, either the ratio is changing or maybe there is something in the water?

Could it be that we are for the most part over weight and do not recognized what our bodies are trying to tells us? This is a real possibility and I can speak from a firsthand experience. While not everyone affected by Achalasia is overweight many who are could actually afford to lose a few pounds.

Case in point, I have had Achalasia symptoms without an official medically purchased diagnosis, for some 15 years. There have been times where I have had throat spasms that have lasted for hours and I could not swallow my own saliva.

In the beginning, it appeared to be certain foods, coated caplets, or capsules that triggered my throat spasms. Then it evolved into anxiety of trying not to think about it when I would eat virtually anything and yet that alone would cause it to happen. Needless to say, when I finally had a spell that lasted for some 13 hours, I decided to take some decisive measures.

Having a son-in-law that is a doctor was where I ask for a discount diagnosis over Skype that I realized he too had had some short bouts with this condition as well. He told me that what he did was to take a two a day dose of Prilosec, one in the morning and one before the evening meal. He did this for a month and then reduced the dosage to simply 1 a day. He has not had any more trouble.

Myself, I did this same method and added the fact that I lost some 15 pounds to boot and so far have been free to eat whatever I have wanted, red meat, lettuce, nuts, and all the other foods that I feared due to my throat spasms. This weight loss approach has worked for me over the last 15 years on two different occasions. Once I start having regular choking spells or throat spasms if I lose a bit of weight the problem seems to go away until I have regained the weight over time.

As to the Prilosec application, there have been some people who have questioned whether the use of this pill actually caused them to incur the Achalasis symptoms. Personally, I think not, but the cases were of individuals over the age of approximately 60 years of age that encountered the problems after taking Prilosec. It could be that this was just a coincidence that they were taking Prilosec for their acid reflux problems and it simply escalated into throat spasms from other conditions.

As for quick remedies for the throat spasms, I have found that hot water, coffee temperature, sipped in very small amounts seems to relax my throat to open up in most cases. The main thing is to relax as much as possible and not rush the remedies that seem to help. Anxiety is definitely at play here as well so, mentally you must find a way to relax and let it run its course until you can find a better alternative to stopping or greatly reducing the frequency of this Acalasia condition.
