United Way’s annual campaign remains the community’s largest annual fundraising effort supporting programs aligned with the community’s Continuum of Learning and programs providing food, shelter, healthcare and victim services. “The annual campaign makes United Way the largest private funder of services in the community and shows the commitment and caring of individual donors and participating employers”, said John Kelker, president of United Way. “Because United Way funding is only available to programs demonstrating positive outcomes in our community, a gift to United Way remains the most effective way to support local charities.” During this year’s campaign, four new companies including Ace Sign Company; Eck, Schafer & Punke; American Central Insurance; and TJ Nicoud Insurance Company ran campaigns and were recognized at the event. The highlight of the campaign message was recognizing the five companies whose employees donated the most. These companies including The Horace Mann Companies, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, Memorial Medical Center, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, and BUNN set the pace for other companies and show outstanding community citizenship. Funds raised during the campaign consist of designated donations (to any 501(c)(3) organization) In addition to the campaign announcement, United Way celebrated the growing awareness of programs such as 2-1-1, FamilyWize Free Prescription Drug Card, and United Way’s volunteer website, Get Connected. As part of the program, United Way and U.S. Bank presented three donations to local charities based upon a community-wide incentive to promote Get Connected. Since it’s launch, 500 local, registered users have volunteered for opportunities posted by 47 local nonprofits. The 2013 Campaign Chair, Dan Rayhill, introduced the first family to ever volunteer as United Way’s Campaign Chair. The Becker family of Springfield, will lead the 2014 campaign. Members of the family include Dale & Cathy Becker from Kerber, Eck & Braeckel; Emily Becker from Prairie Cardiovascular Consultants; “For an entire family to serve as this year’s campaign chair sends a powerful statement,” said Kelker, “the Becker’s believe we are at our best when working together, that we are better together, that we are better united.” At the breakfast, United Way donors elected five new members to its Board of Directors. • Ms. Jennifer Gill – Incoming Superintendent at Springfield Public School District 186 • Dr. J.
