By: Coldani Olive Ranch In its second year, the New York International Olive Oil Competition is recognized as one of the most important olive oil awards in the world. Judging was completed by a panel of leading international experts who tasted over 650 Extra Virgin olive oils from 22 different countries. Calivirgin Arbequina, a monovarietal, was 1 of 21 gold medals awarded to the United States in various varietal categories. Italy lead the competition with 51 gold medals and Spain followed with 27. “To produce a great olive oil is a hard endeavor….. Ambition to be the best is what strives producers to produce exceptional olive oil” said Curtis Cord, President of the New York Competition. “Awards like this are humbling and a nice pat on the back for our company and family. Sometimes all of us often move at lightning speed with our heads down so it is nice to stop and enjoy what we are doing from time to time,” said one of Coldani Olive Ranch’s owners and olive miller Mike Coldani. Olives are an annual crop and are harvested between October and January in California. Coldani Olive Ranch’s 2014 harvest olive oils are selected from the company’s 50,000 trees spread over 100 acres of pristine farmland. “This industry has changed a lot in a short amount of time and consumers are starting to become aware of the great olive oils we make here (United States).
