Follow on Google News | Summitt Energy and Toronto Parks and Trees Help to Recover the Canopy in Toronto after Ice StormBy: Summitt Energy “It is very unfortunate that the ice storm took such a tremendous toll on the trees in the Toronto area” said Gerry Haggarty, President of Summitt Energy. “The restoration of trees is important to the City and the environment. Our contribution is intended to assist in its restoration.” Approximately 30 millimetres of freezing rain fell onto the City of Toronto in December 2013 causing severe ice damage to homes, trees and property. More than four million trees dominate our ravines, line our boulevards and beautify our parks. Six million more trees are located on private property. The damage to City trees is estimated to be in the millions of dollars and has had a devastating impact on the tree canopy. "The Foundation would like to acknowledge the generosity of Summitt Energy for their commitment to our Recover The Canopy Campaign. Working closely with the City of Toronto and our corporate partners, we have begun to assess the physical devastation caused to the trees and parks throughout the city, and initiate an action plan towards recovery” said Andrew Sorbara, Chair, Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation, the charitable, not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting Toronto’s 1,500 public parks. About Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation (www.torontoparksandtrees.org): Founded in 2002, the Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation is a charitable public foundation dedicated to enhancing Toronto’s parks and green spaces.
