Bodycentral Ultimate Sports Asylum Physical Therapists Support USA Synchro National Championships

ORO VALLEY, Ariz. - April 14, 2014 - PRLog -- Oro Valley, Arizona- Over 350 swimmers from over 41 teams made their way to the Oro Valley Aquatic Center to compete for titles in the 2014 U.S. National Synchronized Swimming Championships April 8-12. Members of the USA Junior National team performed an exhibition on Saturday.

Synchronized swimming, better known as "synchro", is a mix of swimming, dance, and gracefully coordinated acrobatics. It began as "water ballet" in the late 19th century and official competitions began in the 1930's. Synchro was included in the Olympics in the 1984 Los Angeles Games and has been a growing sport since that time.

"We are excited to be a part of this event, and to be here to support the athletes and the Oro Valley Aquatic Center, "said Dr. Jennifer Allen, Physical Therapist and co-founder of Bodycentral Physical Therapy. "Synchro requires significant flexibility, strength, and endurance. Shoulder and knee overuse injuries are common in the participants, and we are glad we could be here to help them with these issues, and to help raise awareness for the sport."

Dr. Tonya Bunner, Physical Therapist and co-founder of Bodycentral added "I am proud of our Therapists who are volunteering for the event, and am happy to be out here supporting our community. We believe part of our responsibility is reaching out and helping at events like this. We have our entire staff trained as Emergency Responders for this very reason- they are a tremendous group of people."

Ohio State captured the team gold in the U.S. Senior National Championships, 2012 Olympian Mary Killman won the solo event, and Mary Killman and Reem Abdalazem took gold in the duet. In the U.S. Junior National Championships, The Aquanuts won the team event, with Karina Boyle taking gold in the solo event. Boyle and her U.S. National Squad teammate Dana Drury won the gold in duet. Santa Clara took the gold in the U.S. 13-15 National Championships, while Jacklyn Luu won the solo event. Luu and Rachel Lau won the duet.

Dr. Allen and Dr. Bunner lead a progressive team of Physical Therapists in the treatment and prevention of orthopaedic and sports injuries, and lead community outreach efforts in the areas of youth sports and wellness, women's fitness, and public education on the prevention and treatment of pain and disease processes.
