DAVIDSON, N.C. - April 14, 2014 - PRLog -- In recognition of National Poetry Month during April, Mayor John M. Woods from the Town of Davidson, North Carolina issued a Mayoral Proclamation to celebrate this literary event. Mayor Woods joins several mayors from cities and towns across North Carolina, at the request of poet Kym Gordon Moore, to commemorate the influence poetry has on the arts, humanities and education in their respective communities. Poetry plays a vital role in the rich culture and development in the town of Davidson.

In 1996, the Academy of American Poets inaugurated National Poetry Month, which is celebrated every April in the United States. Schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers and poets throughout the country band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. Individuals and organizations participate through readings, festivals, book displays, workshops and other poetry-related events to commemorate a genre that is reviving itself as a viable contributor to the development of creativity, awareness and education around the nation.

“Davidson is a community that values education and literacy. Davidson College is a major presence in town and many poets are on the faculty: Suzanne Churchill, Brenda Flanagan, Elizabeth Mills, Christine Marshall, Alan Michael Parker, and Tony Abbott, professor emeritus, to name a few. They share their poetry at a variety of venues around town. We have many schools in Davidson where children learn to love poetry at an early age. Our public library is the center of our community, and children are encouraged to read poetry to a therapy dog. Our DavidsonLearns lifelong learning program offers courses in poetry that are well-attended and very much appreciated. We recognize that poetry is an essential part of the arts and continue to encourage our citizens to write, read and listen to it.” – Mayor John M. Woods. It is evident that Davidson, North Carolina is steeped in historical roots and literary refinement.
