About Runway Moms for a Cause (www.runwaymoms.org)
Runway Moms for a Cause (RMFC) is a fashion initiative with the mission to serve as a vehicle to raise funds for non-profit organizations. Each year, RMFC will profile and celebrate accomplishments of mothers who impact change in their communities. Lara Akinsanya is the founder of RMFC and the face behind internationally acclaimed ready-to-wear clothing brand L~Shandi Designs. Since her grand entrance to the global fashion scene, she has been featured on Fox, Washington Post Express, Lucky Magazine, Splash, and The Nigerian Guardian. An active member of the Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce, she has participated on several panel discussions related to economic development through fashion programs in the greater Washington DC area. As philanthropic a mother of twin pre-schoolers, volunteering is part of her life and she participates in various charity work from street cleanup, teaching, charity walks, and providing public health services such as assisting physicians during surgeries. It was only a matter of time before she felt compelled to use her successful fashion design platform to raise awareness on issues close to her heart.
About Kidsave International (www.KidSave.org)
Kidsave’s mission is to create change so forgotten orphanage and foster kids grow up in families and connected to caring adults. Children cannot raise themselves. Without families, the odds are against them growing into productive citizens and the loss to society is devastating. In the summer of 1999, Kidsave gave 177 older orphanage children summer vacations in the US with American families — and 97% were adopted. It was a miracle for these children and for Terry and Randi (founders of Kidsave) it provided the basis for creating Kidsave’s Family Visit Model, a program that has now been successfully tested in Russia, Colombia and the USA as way to help older orphanage and foster kids find parents and committed mentors. In the years since 1999, Kidsave has helped over 20 governments and 15,000 children through our direct programs and training. Yet countless millions languish in orphanages and foster care. Kidsave’s goal is to change that — so that every child has a permanent family. Kidsave’s goal is to find families and permanent connections for one million children by 2020.
