I Work With My Ex Boyfriend - How To Handle It

I work with my ex boyfriend. Not easy is it? If you find yourself in the unenviable position of having to interact with your ex boyfriend at work, you will need to know how to handle it so that you don't come off as upset or needy.

April 12, 2014 - PRLog -- Working with your ex boyfriend is never easy, there are a whole multitude of rights and wrongs to navigate and it can be hard to function properly. You have probably already heard loads of advice on why you shouldn't start relationships with co workers, but you thought you would beat the statistics and that your relationship would work. Sadly yours too has fallen fowl and you need to know what to do to make work more bearable. It is too late now to take the 'don't date a co-worker' advice. You have to make the most of a bad situation and maintain some sort of civility with your ex boyfriend. Here is how it's done.

Working with your ex boyfriend is even more uncomfortable and tense if you still have feelings for them. Having to see him everyday and pretend that everything is ok is a job in itself. You can be very self conscious, don't know how to communicate with him, or if you should even acknowledge him at all. These situations are never easy and the discomfort that you both feel in each other's company can be almost too hard to bear. Your co-workers notice it too and it seems like your break up is affecting everyone that works with you. This is not what you wanted to happen. So how do you make it better?

Well one thing that you can't do is insist that your ex boyfriend finds another job. Making demands on him like that isn't really fair, no matter how the relationship ended. If you really think that you cannot handle being anywhere near him, then you could try and find somewhere else to work or transfer into a different department. The change could actually do you good and it means that you won't have to be faced with the constant barrage of memories of where you fell for him. You have to keep in mind that your place of work is a professional environment and you should keep your private life separate. If you can't draw a line under things then your quality of work could quickly slip and you could find yourself on verbal warnings from your boss.

Instead of letting your heartache affect your work, you could try and use it to your advantage. By concentrating on your job responsibilities and applying yourself, you will be much better able to take your mind of the break up and rise through the ranks at work. How better to show your ex boyfriend what you are capable of and what he has missed out on?

Office or work social events can also prove very challenging for the recently dumped. You are expected to move on and get on with things like normal. It is difficult to be out socially with your ex boyfriend and watch him flirting and talking to other girls. You should be enjoying these events and letting your hair down but it seems impossible. If you know that you cant handle the office party then stay away for your own sanity. As time progresses you will find it easier to control your feelings, but you shouldn't force yourself to do anything that makes you unhappy either, why put yourself through it?

Being A Grown Up And Accepting The Break Up
If your ex boyfriend was the one who decided to end things, you will be very hurt at the moment and might be ashamed to see him or look him in the eye. No one expects you to march into work the next day with a smile plastered on your face, pretending that all is great. You shouldn't have to do this either, you are only human and break ups take their toll on the best of us. Nevertheless, it is important that you retain a professional demeanour at work for your own sanity and that of your workmates too. You don't want to be responsible for creating a dramatic and awkward atmosphere.

You can't ignore the fact that you were in a relationship with him either. This can come across as very childish and immature. It will also prolong the emotional pain of the breakup. You need to face up to the reality of your breakup head on and then draw a line under it for your own good. No one is pretending that the days and weeks following the break up are going to be easy for you, but you can't avoid them either. If you take leave from work it will be pretty obvious to everyone, including your ex boyfriend why you are doing it. Don't allow yourself to succumb so easily to weakness. Show him how strong you are and how you can cope without him. Maybe he expected you to crumble and make a huge drama out of your split at work. Don't give him the satisfaction.

Don't Discuss Your Private Life With Your Work Colleagues
There may be an urge on your part to discuss what happened with your ex boyfriend at work. Maybe you have friends at work that you think that you can trust. You would be surprised how fast office gossip spreads though. You don't want what you have said to get back to your ex boyfriend. That will only make matters worse. No matter how good your intentions are, chinese whispers can soon blow things out of all proportion and make your relationship with your ex boyfriend even more tense. This is even more true if you have mutual friends, something which is unavoidable if you all work together. It is best to keep things professional and bite your lip. If he treated you badly you might want to curse him and let everyone know how much you hate him, remember how this will reflect on you though - really badly.

Have You Tried Talking To Him?
It might be the most obvious thing to do, but you would be surprised about how good it feels to clear the air with your ex boyfriend and setting down some ground rules for working together. It is best to know where you both stand and behaving like adults will make things a whole lot easier for you both. If you can put your differences behind and get some closure it will help you enormously. You suggest that you should meet up for a coffee after work and not tempt to sort things out at work. You will probably find that your ex boyfriend wants the same as you. He will only be too happy to stay out of your way and respect your space.
