Ten Tips For Great Photographs

Over the years, I have earned many new clients because I have shared these concepts. They work!

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - April 11, 2014 - PRLog -- (1) LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Put some effort in selecting a beautiful location for your wedding photographs. Ask your friends or search the Internet for areas with English gardens, sweeping staircases, Roman archways, Greek columns, Spanish fountains, or Tropical Gardens.  Even consider checking in early to a beautiful resort for your photography.

(2) HIRE A PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP ARTIST

A beautiful makeup job could make your photographs look like you spent a fortune on them. Your investment in makeup will easily be returned.

(3) GET ROMANTIC

Fresh cut flowers, candles, sprinkles of rose petals or shear material draped over windows will bring extra warmth to any room. Be sure to coordinate these extra touches with your photographer before he arrives.

(4) MAKE PRIVATE TIME FOR YOUR ROMANTIC PORTRAITS

Most couplesdo better while people are not watching. For weddings, your choices are:

a) early (before your guests arrive),

b) after the ceremony (everyone wants your attention)

c) during the reception (everyone still wants your attention) or

d) after your guests leave (now you & your makeup look tired).

(5) THE ADVANTAGE OF “BEFORE”

When do you first want to see each other? That’s a question only you can answer. Often saved ‘til the bride walks down the aisle, but what’s best? There’s an alternate called the Private First Meeting and it’s just that… private. Pick a location where you can both meet each other before the ceremony that’s especially romantic, long before your guests arrive. I like this alternative because the nervousness melts away and many of your favorite photographs can be shot while your makeup & hair are at its best. Shoot the wedding party and family early too! Then take a break before the ceremony. Obviously this won’t work with early weddings, but the reward is that you get to join in with the cocktail hour and celebrate with your guests rather than being whisked away.

(6) SHOOT YOUR FAVORITE PORTRAITS DURING DAYLIGHT

Sunset ceremonies are romantic, but most of your photographs will follow afterward when its dark and flash photography is required.  This is “artificial light” and the photographs will lack depth because the background falls to black.  It’s much better to shoot your photographs with “natural light” in the afternoon for more warmth and depth.

(7) HIRE AN EXPERIENCED PHOTOGRAPHER

Don’t skimp and hire your cousin unless you want plain images. Choose a photographer well trained in formal portraiture as well as in photojournalism.  They are two distinct styles, but both are a must.  Candid moments are priceless, but posing can sometimes be just as important. Don’t leave your cherished family memories to an amateur.

(8) MEET YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER BEFORE YOU SIGN ANYTHING

You have the right to know their personality and see their work.  Many photography businesses will show you their “ace” photographers’ work, but bring someone else in for your wedding. You should have the opportunity to meet your photographer before signing the contract or making a payment.

(9) BE SURE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER CAN MAKE AN ALBUM

Maybe you just want the images on a DVD, but do you really have the ability to create a beautiful album yourself? And do you have the time? Can you find as nice an album cover? Even if you just want to buy the images, hire a photographer who builds albums in his head while he shoots. He will provide images to complete your story with all the details.  If money is short, ask your photographer if they can offer an album at a later time.  Shoot-Only photographers tend to be less accountable and often miss shots necessary to complete your story.

(10) LIMIT YOUR RISKS

Choose a photographer with well-maintained cameras. Also asks if he carries a second complete system just in case something goes wrong with the first camera. Remember, you are entrusting your photographer to document all the cherished moments from your wedding day. Limit your risks.
