Dallas Chamber Symphony Presents First Annual Sight of Sound Film Competition, April 29

DALLAS - April 11, 2014 - PRLog -- As the Dallas Chamber Symphony completes its sophomore season, the chamber orchestra serves up a mix of old and new, pairing traditional presentations of works by Beethoven, along with a varied selection of short pieces set to new independent films, in the culmination of the Chamber Symphony’s new Sight of Sound Film Competition launched in January 2014.

While Dallas Chamber Symphony has become renowned for its innovative concerts which pair classic silent movies to newly commissioned musical scores, its new Sight of Sound International Film Competition explores the opposite of this creative cinematic process. The Chamber Symphony has called on all types of filmmakers from around the world to create new, short, silent films for selections of classical music. Participating filmmakers are eligible for cash prizes, and the Finalists have their films screened in concert, with the orchestra performing live. Sight of Sound, to some concertgoers, may seem reminiscent of Disney’s Fantasia, but with a novel and strict adherence to the complete performance of a composer’s original musical work. Pieces are not altered for their film; rather, participating filmmakers create new visual works that are designed to the music. Filmmakers will introduce dramatic narrative, explore abstract visualizations and animation, providing their complementary music selection a creative modern twist.

The orchestra will also serve up traditional fare as it performs selections by Beethoven. The Creatures of Prometheus is the composer’s only ballet score, and its overture is his earliest to remain in the standard concert repertoire. The Symphony No. 2 in D Major is also a relatively early work of Beethoven’s, ironic for its joyful and youthful exuberance throughout, it is seemingly without sign of the composer’s personal struggle and tragedy in coming to terms with advanced hearing loss.

The performance will be held on Tuesday, April 29th, 2014 at Dallas City Performance Hall (2520 Flora Street, Dallas, Texas 75201). ABOUT DALLAS CHAMBER SYMPHONY

Launched in September 2012, the Dallas Chamber Symphony is the newest professional performance ensemble in North Texas.
