The festival is named after King David Kalakaua, the last king of the Kingdom of Hawaii who sparked a renewed interest in hula in the late 1800s.Before his reign, the dance was banned by the Christian convert Queen Ka'ahumanu.
Today, the week-long affair gathers many tourists curious about the art form, which the Merrie Monarch has described as “the language of the heart and therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people.” Hula is particularly known as a means for the old folk to share myths and legends to the next generation through the hand, foot and hip motions as well as chants, most of which honor the volcano Goddess Pele.
Harold Clarke, a local luxury real estate expert from LuxuryBigIsland.com, welcomes those who love the Aloha State to the hula experience at Hilo: “At LuxuryBigIsland.com, we are proud of the Hawaiian culture, with all its rich tradition, wonderful sights and sounds of which this festival perfectly embodies.” He adds that he enjoys being a resident and gaining access to these well planned community events, all set within Hawaii’s natural beauty and enjoyable social island life, a perfect event to enjoy with friends and family.
Aside from being the most prestigious ancient and modern hula competition, the Merrie Monarch festival also features hula demonstrations, exhibits, art fairs, musical entertainment, and the Miss Aloha Hula. The competitions will be held at the Edith Kanakaole Tennis Stadium, but the event opens with performances at the AfookChinen Civic Auditorium and ends with a royal parade at downtown Hilo.
As Harold explains, “Hilo offers a great glimpse into the Hawaiian life. Many of my clients have since become enamored with its picturesque attractions – from the forests and waterfalls, to the Imiloa Astronomy Center, Liliuokalani Gardens, and Wailoa River State Park.” LuxuryBigIsland.com helps bring buyers and sellers together to the best luxury real estate properties located in prime communities on the Big Island.
