HICKORY, N.C. - April 11, 2014 - PRLog -- Lee E. Moritz, Jr., Mayor of Conover, North Carolina issued a Mayoral Proclamation recognizing April as National Poetry Month. Mayor Moritz joined several mayors from cities and towns across North Carolina in response to the kind request from North Carolina poet Kym Gordon Moore to commemorate this literary event. The premise behind the mayoral proclamation is to acknowledge and celebrate the rich culture and important role poetry plays in creativity throughout the city of Conover and the state of North Carolina.

In 1996, the Academy of American Poets inaugurated National Poetry Month, which is celebrated every April in the United States. Schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers and poets throughout the country band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. Individuals and organizations participate through readings, festivals, book displays, workshops and other poetry-related events to commemorate a genre that is reviving itself as a viable contributor to the development of creativity, awareness and education around the nation.

Mayor Moritz understands how active community involvement, business development, education and the arts can affect the value and lifestyles of the citizens in Conover. He embraces and encourages the creative development of the arts and humanities that inspire artists in such fields as music, theater, dance, film and visual arts. On April 15, in celebration of National Poetry Month, the Conover Branch of the Catawba County Library will host “Sidewalk Poetry” from 5:30-6:30p.m. Everyone is invited to participate in writing chalk poems and creating art on the sidewalks of the library.
