Yet thanks to AIF’s approach, Umayal now believes in herself and her future. As she closed her remarks with the resounding statement, “Girls can do anything,” the crowd rose to their feet and longtime AIF supporter and community stalwart Anil Godhwani pledged to sponsor Umayal’s higher education. AIF also works to reach the youth population who are unable to complete their schooling and ensure that they can lead successful lives. The Market Aligned Skills Training (MAST) program is a vocational training program for underprivileged youth that works closely with local employers to ensure that the training matches the market demand for skilled labor in the local area, so MAST graduates secure jobs and a secure livelihood for the future. In the Muslim community of Metiabruz, young women like Shyamali Roy and Rehana Khatoon face centuries-old barriers to education and livelihoods. As Rehana reflected, MAST “not only gave me professional skills but changed me personally. It gave me the confidence to go out in the world and be myself.” NY comedian Anish Shah emceed the event.
