Follow on Google News | Bedales student mathematicians excel in early IGCSE resultsBy: Bedales School All Bedales students study the IGCSE course in Mathematics as opposed to the GCSE programme as the IGCSE curriculum is felt to be a more rigorous and in-depth approach to the subject. Bedales students are also encouraged to develop their passion for Mathematics through the extra-curricular programme: there are Junior and Sixth Form Mathematics Societies of interested students and teachers, who meet throughout the academic year to discuss mathematical issues beyond the scope of the school curriculum. Recent discussions have included an exploration into the influence of the Middle and Far East on the history of maths, the etymology of the words algebra and zero and a look at the algorithms used to maximise oil yield in the Gulf region. Students in all year groups also have the chance to enter the Intermediate or Senior UK Mathematics Challenge. Commenting on the results, Keith Budge, Headmaster, Bedales Schools, said: “We are proud of the students’ achievements and that of our teachers who have inspired our young people to reach their potential. The Maths department has a very strong record of enabling students to proceed with Mathematics as a degree choice at the most demanding universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. This has been helped by the special preparation programme that they run for sixth formers who are considering applying for university Mathematics courses.” End
