HAUULA, Hawaii - April 8, 2014 - PRLog -- Stylish Shark-Repellent Swimwear, Wetsuits and Surfboards, with solid science behind them, are finding their way to waves around the world as The Surf Lady (Veronica Grey), the owner of the designs and trademarks, enters into non-exclusive licensing agreements with Boz Wetsuits and Joe DeMarco Surfboards.

Growing up, The Surf Lady developed an irrational fear of sharks. Directly taking on her fears one day, she tried surfing and fell madly in love with the sport. She then had a major problem on her hands. Her love for surfing was forcing her to face her fear of sharks every time she ventured into the water. These constant mental struggles started her on a journey to find something to calm her fears so that she could relax and enjoy her new-found love for surfing.

An adept researcher, The Surf Lady spent countless hours looking through document after document for a clue as to how she could enjoy surfing and yet be protected from shark attacks. A seemingly insignificant entry by Jacque Cousteau in one of his journals caught her eye. Mr. Cousteau recorded that when diving around sharks, they seemed to not take notice of black and white striped equipment. Thus the concept of shark-repellent swimwear and surfboards was born.

The Surf Lady took the information she gathered, including research on one of the sharks’ lethal enemies, the banded sea snake, and designed the swimwear, wetsuits and surfboards to calm her extreme fear of sharks. She is now able to more fully enjoy her love for surfing because she is no longer terrorized each time she enters the water.

Subsequently, Associate Professor Nathan Hart and Winthrop Professor, Shaun Collin, of the UWA's Oceans Institute and School of Animal Biology, released information from their research that backed up Jacque Cousteau’s observations. It appears that as a result of a shark’s neurology and vision structure, black and white stripes are not seen as normal prey.

The Surf Lady has entered into non-exclusive licensing agreements with Boz Wetsuits, Joe DeMarco Surfboards and Ocean Outfits and she is currently exploring additional relationships. “I’m thrilled with the initial success of my concepts,” The Surf Lady said, “and I look forward to attracting licensing and distribution partners around the world. Making the world of surfing a little bit safer is very important to me.”
