The project was founded in 2011 by Bundaber school teacher Cathy Booth after witnessing the abject poverty and lifelessness in the faces of the children she met in Africa. She was compelled to build her own orphange to give children a second chance at life.
The project assistes orphaned and vulnerable children, local widowed mothers, local tradesmen, local businesses, disabled villagers, neighbouring villages, community volunteers and the communities children. The project has an holistic care appraoch that Umoja will take to provide shelter, care, food, education, love and support to orphaned children in the Ukunda area of Kenya.
The Umoja Writing Competition goes to part proceeds to Umoja Orphanage Kenya (Reg. Charity CH2110) and sponsorship of volunteering to Orphanage Kenya project (a Project of RAWCS) a project sponsored by Sunrise Rotary Club Bundaberg.
