JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - April 5, 2014 - PRLog -- In celebration of National Poetry Month, Mayor Sammy Phillips of Jacksonville, North Carolina issued a Mayoral Proclamation on behalf of his city. Joining several mayors from cities and towns across North Carolina, Mayor Phillips issued this proclamation recognizing the influence poetry has on the arts, humanities and education.  Poetry inspires a network of artists in multi-media arts. One of Jacksonville’s upcoming events, the Annual Poster, Poetry and Essay Contest is sponsored by the Onslow Commission for Persons with Disabilities.

The Academy of American Poets inaugurated National Poetry Month in 1996, which is celebrated every April. Schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers and poets throughout the United States band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. Individuals and organizations participate through readings, festivals, book displays, workshops and other poetry-related events to commemorate a genre that is reviving itself as a viable contributor to the development of creativity, awareness and education around the country.

The city of Jacksonville is known as “A Caring Community” and this is evident in a welcome statement by Mayor Phillips on the city’s website. “When Jacksonville was designated as an All-American City, it was because it had become known as a caring community. The recognition that our community has come together repeatedly to help our military families and loved ones, to help someone in need, and to help each other continues to this day. The Freedom Fountain recognizes this intangible pride by being dedicated to all those who have come through Onslow County in service to their Country.” Mayor Phillips graciously accepted the invitation to participate and issue his Mayoral Proclamation recognizing April as National Poetry Month from North Carolina poet, Kym Gordon Moore. It’s clearly evident that Phillips understands the importance of the arts and their influence on the community.
