ST. LOUIS - April 7, 2014 - PRLog -- On Monday, April 28th, Operation Food Search (http://www.operationfoodsearch.org/events/what-matters-film-screening.php) (OFS) will offer an opportunity for film lovers and the socially conscious to satisfy their appetites on all levels by hosting a benefit screening of the award-winning documentary What Matters? (http://whatmattersfilm.com/) at Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood.  Proceeds from the event will benefit persons who struggle with hunger and food insecurity in the St. Louis region.  The film focuses attention on the global issue of extreme poverty as 3 friends (two idealistic activists and one skeptic) attempt to live on $1.25 a day, the world’s standard for extreme poverty, as they journey across 3 continents.  Their adventure takes an unexpected turn when two of them survive a deadly plane crash in Africa and all must fight to finish what they started to bring attention to an issue of global significance – extreme poverty. Filmmaker and subject Dan Parris will conduct a Q&A after the film to discuss the issues raised in the film.

Advance ticket reservations for this all-ages screening of What Matters? are $10 and available now through April 27 at www.OperationFoodSearch.org.  All reservations will be held at the door.  Tickets will also be available on April 28 when the doors open at 6:30 p.m.  The film begins at 7:00 p.m., followed by a post-film discussion with Parris.   All proceeds from the ticket sales will directly benefit Operation Food Search.  Operation Food Search will have its blue collection barrels at the event for guests to make donations of non-perishable food items.  Anyone donating food items will be entered into a raffle for a gift certificate.

The film chronicles the lives of many poverty-stricken families and offers insight as to how this problem can be addressed.  The film deals with this serious subject in a manner that not only educates and motivates the audience, it is also entertains.   The filmmakers’ core goal is to connect people who need something to live for with people who just need something to live. Parris feels that “What makes the film truly special is that it takes an honest, straightforward approach to extreme poverty that appeals to both the activist and the apathetic.”  Parris also emphasizes that “this is a funny, adventurous as well as compelling film focused on an issue of universal importance.  “I am honored to partner with Operation Food Search by donating ticket proceeds to support their hunger relief efforts.”

The film features a number of well-known activists including New York Times best-selling author Katie Davis - a 22 year old adoptive mother of 14 Ugandan orphans and founder of Amazima Ministries and Paul Rusesabagina - the man on whom the film Hotel Rwanda is based and the founders of Invisible Children.

After 10 festival runs and 2 major awards (Best Doc – St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase; Visionary Award – LA Awareness Film Fest), What Matters? is now partnered with independent film distributor Cinedigm along with marketing and promotions firm Movie to Movement to help spread their message.

The filmmakers have high hopes that the St. Louis community will rally around the documentary’s great story and spread a call to action.  Screenings of What Matters? at 80+ theatrical, community and campus showings nationwide are building awareness for the filmmakers upcoming iTunes/VOD release later this spring.  To learn more about this moving documentary, please visit www.whatmattersfilm.com or  www.facebook.com/WhatMattersFilm.
