Impacting Mental Health by Changing the Brains of Children: A Breakthrough Approach

The Center for the Self in Schools, an outreach program of The Brzycki Group, an education and psychology think tank, has developed a mental health model that promises to transform people's lives, the iSelf model.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - April 3, 2014 - PRLog -- The iSelf model creates the neural pathways in parenting, teaching and learning, and counseling methods that help children change their brains – literally who they are and their capacities to be happy, healthy, aware, and to flourish.

What is certain to provide proactive and dynamic new methods to answer President Obama's call for a new dialogue on mental health in time to honor Mental Health Day on May 8, a new study demonstrates the causal relationship between self knowledge and mental health. Dr. Brzycki presented the most comprehensive research to date on the dire well-being statistics, and a breakthrough model to impact these in his keynote speech at The Learning and The Brain conference in February 2014.

The breakthrough model of the self known as the "Integrated Self" or "iSelf" demonstrates how to impact the psychological, emotional, and physical well-being of children through parenting, schooling, counseling, and medical methods. We need to teach about the mind and the self to children to better prepare them for 21st century challenges. Yet, neuroscientists, teachers, psychologists, parents, counselors and others who are attempting to impact the growth and development of children are operating without a comprehensive and agreed upon model of the self. The absence of a model of self makes it difficult, if not impossible, to develop and implement strategies to empower children to be happy, healthy, aware, and flourishing in the 21st century. The iSelf model is a well-researched, tested, and comprehensive model of the self for use by researchers and practitioners alike, with examples of how this model is used in K-16 classrooms, counseling sessions, and everyday parenting.

Dr. Frederick Brown a leading psychology professor and researcher at the Pennsylvania State University asserted, "The Self in Schooling: Theory and Practice – How to Create Happy, Healthy, Flourishing Children in the 21st Century (2013), is a high-level tour de force of the currently available information on the brain, cognition, social influences, and emotion and how each addresses and tries to measure what is occurring in educational processes."

The iSelf model is being called "The Handbook for a Good Life" and is being used to create a new self by literally changing the brain. The model and research are available in Dr. Brzycki's book, The Self in Schooling: Theory and Practice - How to Create Happy, Healthy, Flourishing Children in the 21st Century.
