Nicholas Papapetros, D.D.S Explains Why Your Oral Health Matters

April 3, 2014 - PRLog -- These days, a visit to the dentist isn’t just about checking for tooth decay or having a cavity filled. Today’s dentists take a much broader view of your complete oral health and even how it can have an impact on your overall health.

When you visit your dentist for a routine cleaning and checkup, he or she will also assess the state of your gums, looking for the presence of disease, addressing concerns like jaw alignment and TMJ, and discussing any concerns you might have – from pain to feeling self-conscious about the state of your smile.

If you’re fortunate, your next trip to the dentist will only be for preventive care, including a cleaning, a check for tooth decay or disease, and perhaps diagnostic X-rays. But if your dentist discovers a source of concern during your check-up, don’t despair, because modern dental treatments are designed to effectively address a range of oral health problems. And by visiting your dentist regularly in the first place, you will increase your odds of early detection of any oral problems before they become serious or end up affecting your overall health.

Here are a few things you can do to boost your oral health:

·       Keep it clean. Practicing good daily oral hygiene is a great deterrent to dental and oral difficulties. Brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste and floss regularly to eliminate plaque buildup and the chance of decay. If you are particularly prone to decay, your dentist might suggest a rinse that can be an addition to your brushing and flossing routine.

·       Make that appointment. Make sure you keep up a regular schedule of dental appointments. If a concern arises between planned appointments, contact your dentist to ask about the problem and schedule an additional appointment if needed.

·       Watch what you eat. Healthy nutrition has as much of an impact on your oral health as it does your general health. Limit sugars and corrosive foods like soda. Make your mouth happy with foods rich in nutrients like vitamins and calcium.

·       Kick the bad habits. From smoking to teeth grinding, bad oral habits can affect the state of your mouth. Your dentist can be a resource for addressing and eliminating any habits that are harmful to your oral health.

·       Protect yourself. There’s a reason people wear helmets and use seatbelts: to reduce the possibility of injury. If you play a contact sport, a mouth guard could be your best bet to preventing a dental injury that could be painful and costly.

·       Know your mouth. By paying attention to any sudden or gradual problems in your mouth, from tooth pain to sores that won’t go away, you can be the best resource when it comes to your oral health. When changes do occur, seek help. Your dentist is always happy to listen to your questions and concerns and help come up with a diagnosis and solution.

The field of oral health has seen tremendous advances over the last few decades. Dentists have an excellent array of diagnostic equipment at their disposal and are trained to address a wide range of oral health issues. Advances in treatments and therapies have come a long way over the years, ensuring a world of options when you walk through the door of your dentist’s office. By establishing a relationship with your dentist, you can work together to ensure that you are flashing a healthy smile.
