By: Creative Monster Productions “I was at the library one day and picked up a book that had “Unbought and Unbossed” on the cover and is was about this woman Shirley Chisholm whom I’ve never heard of until that moment I could not believe that a woman, a black woman, had run what turned out to be a serious Presidential Campaign in 1972. I read the book twice and then I started reading about politics in those days and became fascinated with whole time period. The story would not go out of my head and I kept reading more about it and then I started seeing visions of a film. I remember reading one of the books about her stepping on the stage at the 1972 Democratic convention to give her concession speech. I was amazed that this was the first time a black woman took to the podium, as a candidate, in a national election. She was alone, she didn’t really have support from either the men or the women. Now that takes balls. That’s when I decided that this is going to be a film. “ Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm (November 30, 1924- January 1, 2005) was years ahead of her time. She was the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Congress (1968) and the first African-American woman to run, and secure delegates, for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States (1972). Two groups Chisholm cofounded, the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Organization for Women (NOW), continue to thrive. Drawn to politics, Chisholm was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1964. Four years later, Chisholm used a sound truck and the slogan “Unbought and Unbossed” to win the 12th Congressional District seat, taking office in 1969. With little money but a dedicated cadre of supporters, Chisholm sought the 1972 Democratic nomination for President of the United States. Despite being on the ballot in only 14 states, Chisholm had more than 150 delegates at the Democratic National Convention that year, eventually conceding the nomination to George McGovern. Chisholm served seven terms in Congress before retiring in January 1983. She taught, lectured, wrote, and, as she had throughout her career, continued to speak out for the rights of women, people of color and the poor. "I'd like them to say that Shirley Chisholm had guts,” she said when asked of her legacy. “That's how I'd like to be remembered."
