Follow on Google News | Study: A new dental implant gel coating may improve bone growthBy: Calabasas Dental Institute In order for dental implants to succeed, they must integrate in the adjacent bone tissue. Gels made by a large biological molecule can be used to coat implants. Researchers at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France have conducted neutron scattering experiments showing how a protein that promotes bone growth binds to the surface of implants and can be released in a controlled way. The study, conducted by scientists from Uppsala University and ILL, shows the coated titanium surfaces can bind protein molecules, which can be released slowly once the surface interacts with a calcium ion solution, stimulating bone growth on the implant. Using a technique that gives a detailed account of what happens at a surface, researchers showed that the protein BMP-2 was bound to the gel and that it was stable in water but could be released slowly by adding solutions containing calcium. Dr. Greg Rubin, of the Calabasas Dental Institute, said this study demonstrates a major advancement in dental implant science and technology. “This new data, if it can be used in clinical applications, will have an enormous benefit on dental implant patients who have suffered bone loss prematurely or who can’t regenerate bone on their own,” he said. “It’s an interesting and viable solution allowing more patients to get their smiles and teeth restored. I do however feel that additional research in the area is needed.” The study is published in the current issue of Advanced Engineering Materials.
