Euan, who now has three IRT territories across the East of Scotland and the North East of England, worked in financial services for five years before starting with IRT. He claims a mixture of boredom and wanting to start-up on his own led him to choose IRT Surveys.
Founded in 2002, IRT Surveys is a well-established thermal imaging company. IRT specialises in non-destructive testing of buildings via infrared surveys, thermal imaging and electronic leak detection. Over the past 11 years the company has surveyed over 12 million metres of flat roofs, solved countless persistent defect issues, resolved numerous disputes and helped business owners ensure they have energy efficient buildings that are free of defects, resulting in substantial savings for customers.
Euan explains: “I had heard of IRT Surveys before so knew all about the excellent work it does. I had always thought at the back of my mind that this was something I would like to do as being my own boss and being 100% in control of all the decisions really appealed to me. Then in 2009 I started to get a little bit bored of my job so I decided to take a chance and go for it. I already have four Subway franchises, with managers in them all, so I knew franchising worked.
“I really had no reservations before I started. I knew my skills matched what was needed and I knew my target market, so it was all about hard work.My research showed me due to environmental, climate change and legislative pressures IRT’s services were really in demand, so if you combine this with its excellent reputation and track record, I knew could make it work.
“The training I received was brilliant, a great mix of technical and sales. After it was completed you really felt you could hit the ground running. At the end of the training IRT gives you a list of typical clients to call and within the first month I had my first order. Then four more orders over the next three months – which was much better than I had expected. I am typically closing two to three projects a week now.
“I now have one employee who helps me out as I have so much work on. I really am feeling very positive for the next five years as I can only see it getting better.I really would recommend an IRT franchise to anyone who is considering this as a career option as long as they are willing to put in the hard work.”
Stewart Little, managing director of IRT surveys adds: “We give franchisees everything they need to start up and build a highly profitable business. Businesses and public bodies are under ever increasing pressure to save energy, use resources efficiently and cut carbon emissions…we provide the tools and knowledge to help them do this. The franchisee journey starts with a 10-day intensive training programme at our headquarters which will cover sales, marketing, finance and administration as well as the core technical training.”
The cost of an IRT Surveys franchise is £15,000 (+VAT) plus there will also be a capital expenditure (for essential equipment) and working capital requirement.
