License plate recognition cameras alert Lighthouse Point Police to suspect, leading to arrest

LIGHTHOUSE POINT, Fla. - March 31, 2014 - PRLog -- license plate recognition (ALPR) cameras provided by NDI Recognition Systems (NDI-RS) alerted Lighthouse Point police officers to a stolen vehicle on March 26, 2014, leading to the arrest of a burglary suspect, according to the SunSentinel newspaper.

ALPR cameras spotted an SUV reported stolen on March 21. A Lighthouse Point police officer saw the vehicle in the driveway of a home, where a man exited the home carrying an object, entered the vehicle, and left the area. Police followed the vehicle to Pompano Beach, and then notified the Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BSO) about the incident.

Sheriff’s deputies followed the vehicle onto Interstate 95, where it went the wrong way in the northbound lanes. The suspect abandoned the vehicle and climbed over a fence into a nearby neighborhood. In an unusual twist, the suspect unsuspectingly flagged down an unmarked police vehicle that was participating in the search for him, seeking a ride. The deputy arrested the suspect.

The stolen vehicle and other items, including two handguns, were recovered by BSO deputies.

Lighthouse Point police chief Ross Licata said the NDI-RS ALPR cameras that triggered the events have been tremendously successful for the city, helping the police department make over 100 arrests and recover more than $1 million in stolen property since their installation in 2010.
