PRLog - Mar. 31, 2014 - David Legget, from Barnton, Edinburgh, has taken over his local Jim’s Mowing franchise after returning home after spending thirteen years in Australia.

Jim’s Mowing is the largest lawn mowing and garden maintenance franchise in the world. It was started in Melbourne, Australia, in 1982 by Jim Penman and has expanded rapidly ever since. The Jim’s Mowing franchise was launched in 1989 and now has over 2000 franchisees worldwide, servicing over 10,000 clients every day.

David explains: “I started with Jim’s Mowing almost exactly 3 years ago. Before returning to Edinburgh I worked in Chamonix and previous to that I spent thirteen years in Australia.

“I was attracted to Jim’s as I really wanted to be my own boss and work outdoors. A franchise appealed as I liked the idea of having a support network around me as I had no real gardening experience, plus I have limited IT and office skills.

“Within two weeks of hearing about Jim’s I had basically signed up, it just ticked all the boxes. So far It has turned out to be a great decision. I have just been to see my accountant and the turnover for the last year was just over £50, 000. The first year was tough like it is with any new business, but work hard and stick at it and you will really see the rewards.

“The area I picked is quite affluent so at the start many houses already had gardeners, so there was quite a lot of competition for work. But Jim’s agreed to widen my area and since then I have found it much more rewarding.

“The main challenge in my first year was definitely the weather, but it was great last year which really helped. Managing your own time is also a steep learning curve. You always want to find new customers, but you also have to ensure you have enough time to do a consistently good job.

David adds: “I really have no complaints so far. The hours are great and the job is keeping me outdoors and pretty fit and healthy. I’m making a pretty good income doing something I enjoy, so life is good.”
