Innovative steps towards agricultural diversity

Recently I learnt about two progressive farmers from Sangrur district, Sardar Tirath Singh

DELHI, India - March 31, 2014 - PRLog -- and Sardar Jagdeep Singh, having been honoured with the ‘Innovative Farmer Award’ in recognition of their outstanding work in the adoption of innovative agricultural techniques and commercialisation of agriculture’.

What impressed me was that none of these farmers owned any vast swath of land but actually own quite a limited area. While Tirath Singh owned just about 5 acres, Jagdeep Singh owned about 16 acres. It is from these holdings that they carved out success stories for other farmers to follow.

Their success stories can be that of any other farmer across Punjab as the land holdings have shrunk and turned very small. Tirath Singh in particular has set an example for other farmers to follow as how a small area of 5 acres could be converted into a handsome income generating holding. He grew capsicum, cucumber and produced seeds besides owning a few cows to supplement his income. From this holding he generated about Rs 8 lakhs a year which is quite substantial as compared to that generated by producing traditional crops like wheat and paddy.

Jagdeep Singh showed the way towards innovation which not only improved his yield but also helped in preventing pollution caused by burning of the wheat and paddy stubble during the harvesting seasons of these two crops.

These two stories have really impressed me particularly since these concern and relate to almost each and every farmer in Punjab who is looking towards generating more income from his limited land holding. These can really prove to be inspiring for each one of them.
