Will Maserati bring us a V12 tourer?

Mercedes Benz, Bentley, Rolls Royce, even BMW... Why not Maserati

The concept is this. A Maserati bigger than its current Quattroporte to compete with the ever-growing popularity of Rolls Royce and Bentley. 2013 saw the biggest unit sales in a decade for high-end automobiles. Those unit sales winners were Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Mercedes Benz and even Lamborghini. Ferrari unit sales were down and MSRP was a little higher than rest. Ferrari believes in exclusivity not quantity. Ferrari says just because you can afford a Ferrari, doesn't mean you can get a new Ferrari.

So back to Maserati. Maserati needs to increase unit sales. There are a few ways to do this. One is to drop MSRP to appeal to the mid-level luxury buyers such as BMW and Mercedes Benz. Maserati did this just this year with the release of the Ghibli with an MSRP of about $75000 USD. The second is to appeal to the SUV marketplace and in doing so they are building an SUV for release in the next couple of years. But if Fiat wants Maserati to grow into the powerhouse they forecast, they can only do this with the release of a new flagship vehicle.

The marque needs a four-door with 12-cylinders to compete with Bentley's Continental but also not be as big as Rolls Royce's Phantom. Something in between would be sufficient for the uber-highend automobilia owner.
