PRLog - Mar. 27, 2014 - BETHPAGE, N.Y. -- Headlining the biggest media event on Long Island is former New York State Governor -- and much sought-after speaker -- David Paterson.

The Fair Media Council Folio Awards recognize the best in local news and social media. About 600 business and community leaders attend the event, in addition to the New York metro area media. Cohosting the event is FOX 5 anchors Steve Lacy and Duke Castigilone. Television and radio anchors serve as award presenters and MarissaAnn, a Long Island teenager who shot to fame after competing on NBC's The Voice, will perform the National Anthem. The event is taped for broadcast by Hamptons Television.

"The Fair Media Council is honored to host David Paterson this year," said FMC Executive Director Jaci Clement. "At an event where media, business and government officials are brought together, you need a keynoter with an incredible background, a range of experiences from which to speak about and an engaging style. Who better than a man who has made history, and been a part of history, his entire life?"

Paterson become the 55th governor of the State of New York in 2008, following the resignation of Eliot Spitzer. He was also the first African-American governor in the state's history, as well as the state's first African-American lieutenant governor.

Paterson earned a history degree from Columbia University and a law degree from Hofstra University. He followed his father into the world of politics, and was elected to the state senate in 1985.

Despite being legally blind since an infection in infancy left him with no sight in his left eye and only partial vision in the right, Paterson completed high school in three years.  In 1999, he completed the New York City Marathon. In 2004, he became the first visually impaired person to address a Democratic National Convention. He remains one of the leading advocates in the nation for the blind and visually impaired.
