The problem is human trafficking. According to the FBI, human sex trafficking is the most common form of modern-day slavery. Estimates place the number of its domestic and international victims in the millions, mostly females and children enslaved in the commercial sex industry for little or no money. The workshop -- “Chosen: The Slave Next Door: Learn How You Can be a Voice for the Voiceless” – will take place on Thursday, March 27, at Woodbury University’s Fletcher Jones Auditorium. “Sex traffickers are very sophisticated and become friends with their victims and their families before they strike,” said Angela Asanna, Woodbury undergrad and a U.S. Army Intelligence veteran who served in Afghanistan. Asanna’ Who: Guest speakers include: o Kathleen Kim: Kim is a Professor of Law at Loyola Law School, where she teaches immigration, torts and human trafficking. A co-author of the California Trafficking Victims Protection Act and a former practicing attorney, she has represented trafficking victims, written articles on human trafficking, and is a newly appointed member of the Los Angeles Police Commission. Kim has more than a dozen years’ experience in human trafficking issues. She will speak about local cases of human trafficking, and how to spot someone that is being trafficked or sold. o Kim Puccio: Puccio has been leading the charge against child sex trafficking in the San Fernando Valley. A Burbank resident and loving mother happily raising two daughters, she is courageously fighting through the nightmare that all parents fear. She is a parent of a young girl -- forcibly taken by people she thought she knew -- who is currently being trafficked for sex. Puccio is working tirelessly to spread the word about her daughter, in hopes of finding her and bringing her home, while trying to save others from becoming victims.
