SAN DIEGO - March 25, 2014 - PRLog -- SAN DIEGO, CA. – March 25, 2014- On Tuesday, April 8, from 10AM to 9PM, the iconic Vermont ice cream company is holding its annual Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop Seaport Village. The store will be dishing out free scoops to all in attendance as a way to thank its ice cream-loving fans for their support.

To honor the company’s two founding principles, "Business has a responsibility to give back to the community" and "If it’s not fun, why do it?," they have chosen to partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County (www.SDBigs.org) to raise awareness and increase support for the cause of mentoring local children.

Since its first anniversary in 1979, Ben & Jerry’s has been opening their doors and inviting everyone in the community for a free ice cream cup or cone. The annual Ben & Jerry’s celebration is a way for the company to have some fun and say thank you for another year of San Diego’s loyalty.

"Free Cone Day is the ultimate Ben & Jerry’s celebration for fans and employees. Nothing makes us happier than giving back to the people that support us all year long,” said Ephraim Mallari, Operator of the Seaport Village Scoop Shop. "Celebrating with our community is something that we as a company take a lot of pride in. We are thrilled to partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters to raise awareness for the urgent need to find more volunteers (especially men and Spanish-speaking men and women) to help children broaden their horizons and put smiles on their faces.”

This year, fans can try free scoops of Ben & Jerry’s brand new flavors including:

Hazed & Confused: Hazelnut & chocolate ice cream with fudge chips and a hazelnut fudge swirl

Cotton Candy: Cotton candy ice cream loaded with cotton candy pieces

Big Brothers/Sisters along with their Little Brothers/Sisters and local celebrities will be helping scoop ice cream all-day long. Information on becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister will be available and the organization will also be collecting donations to fund the program that serves over 1,700 children each year.

About Big Brothers Big Sisters:

For over 50 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. The nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network holds itself accountable for children in its program to achieve measurable outcomes, including educational success; avoidance of risky behaviors; and higher aspirations, greater confidence and better relationships. Partnering with parents/guardians, schools, corporations and others in the community, Big Brothers Big Sisters carefully pairs children (“Littles”) with screened volunteer mentors (“Bigs”) and monitors and supports these one-to-one mentoring matches in building safe, enduring relationships.

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides children facing adversity, often those of single or low-income households or families where a parent is incarcerated or serving in the military, with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better.  Locally, Big Brothers Big Sisters serves children ages 7-18 through six distinct programs: Amachi (a program for children with an incarcerated parent), Bigs in Schools & High School Bigs (after school 1:1 mentoring programs), Community Mentoring (the traditional 1:1 mentoring program), Operation Bigs (a program serving children whose active duty military parents are deployable), and Sports Bigs (a sports and active lifestyle mentoring program).
