OREGON, Ohio - March 25, 2014 - PRLog -- Health Services Connection, a home health care company born in East Toledo, celebrates its 20-year anniversary in 2014. The company plans a year-long celebration including monthly promotions, an open house in May with other health-oriented programs to assist the community in the pursuit of wellness.

Formed in October 1994, the company has “provided compassionate students with the skills and attitudes needed to take care of our vulnerable and frail elderly,” according to owner and president, Kathy Crabtree. And now, Health Services Connection serves the community with a staff of home health care aides.

Health Services Connection began life when Crabtree caught the entrepreneurial bug after reading an article in the Metro Press newspaper showcasing the winners of the regional 1994 PRISM awards. Recognizing the possibility of starting her own business, Kathy, an experienced ICU and homecare nurse contacted the River East Economic Revitalization Corporation to begin the process of forming Connections Training Center and Health Services.

Crabtree had developed and taught the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) required 75 hour curriculum for other agencies, so she applied that expertise in addition to her nursing background to her new company. The training center grew into a full-service homecare provider agency with Medicare certification by 1998. At that time the business was incorporated as Health Services Connection, employing nurses as well as nurse aides and contracting with physical, occupational and speech therapists.

The center covered half of the second floor of the Andrews River East building on the corner of Front and Main, an old light bulb factory in an established “enterprise zone.”  A classroom and skills lab was constructed and students were recruited from the Health and Family Services Department. “As a woman- and locally-owned business, located in a revitalized enterprise zone, and training welfare recipients to take care of Medicaid and Medicare clients we were invited to the White House to meet with Hillary Clinton in 1998.” Crabtree said.

The Medicare division of the agency was sold in 2006 to a national homecare company and the home health aide division moved to the current Oregon location on Navarre Avenue.  The agency continues to serve PASSPORT Medicaid waiver and private duty clients. “With 30 home health aides employed by Health Services Connection we manage to serve close to one-hundred clients on a weekly basis.  Annual performance competency checks and monthly in-services keep our employees’ skills up to date. We are very proud of our staff and the attitudes they bring to their job.”

Look for more details soon about the celebrations planned by Health Services Connection.
