BRISTOL, Conn. - March 26, 2014 - PRLog -- The Bristol Senior Center is host to a fantastic opportunity for area seniors on Monday, March 31st; free balance screenings by Physical Therapy Center of Bristol. The expert therapists will assess seniors on their fall risk, overall strengths, and balance.

Free Fall Prevention Assistance for Seniors

Senior citizens are most at risk for balance and dizziness ailments. One in three seniors fall every year but few speak to their physicians about it (CDC.gov). Balance issues are more than uncomfortable; they can increase the risk of falls even more for seniors, or prevent them from doing many every day activities, such as driving, reading, or doing crafts. These activities become difficult to those suffering balance and dizziness symptoms because they require quick movements of the head, which can cause someone to lose their balance or become dizzy.

“Balance and dizziness issues, or vestibular ailments, are prevalent in the senior citizen demographic. For the children of the sufferers, the everyday worry that their parents or loved ones could fall as a result can be taxing. We wanted to help our Bristol community by offering these free balance screenings in hopes that we may be able to alleviate some stress, or identify a potential issue before it causes something major,” owner Craig Zettergren, of Bristol and Southington-based Physical Therapy Centers, shares.

Preventing Injuries for Bristol Seniors

Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for seniors over 65; this is a major issue and something that can be prevented. Regular exercise can help increase overall physical fitness, which helps strengthen muscles throughout the body, but physical therapy, with targeted and progressively challenging exercises, can help stimulate and strengthen the muscles in the inner ear that control balance. With a licensed therapist like those at the Physical Therapy Center, those with poor balance can experience less flare ups and learn how to handle them on their own.
