HACKENSACK, N.J. - March 24, 2014 - PRLog -- Situated between winding rivers and prone to turbulent storms, northern New Jersey has had an extensive and tumultuous history of flooding. The most severe flood occurred in 1903 when three days of nonstop rain, averaging 12 inches per day, melted more than 23 inches of snow and ice—inundating the cities of Passaic and Wallington and splitting Paterson in two. Since 1945, more than 60 documented storms have wreaked havoc and shaken the region. In 2011, the second-worst storm in North Jersey’s history, Hurricane Irene, struck with more than 11 inches of rain, displacing 6,000 residents in Paterson alone and hitting Bergen and Passaic Counties with a vengeance. Only one year later, Superstorm Sandy rolled into North Jersey, flooding Moonachie and Little Ferry with surges up to five feet. Floods of Northern

For more than 100 years, the Record and its sister publications have chronicled these floods in pictures and words. Floods of Northern New Jersey depicts the newspapers’ rich archival photograph collection, capturing the moment and the devastation of some of these great floods.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, covered bridges dotted the landscape of New Jersey, providing safe passage to travelers. Perhaps the most extraordinary examples of these wooden bridges were found along the western border, crossing the Delaware River into neighboring Pennsylvania. These bridges were feats of construction and engineering but were ultimately unable to prevent the inevitable fate of almost all the covered bridges of the state, namely ice, floods, and fire as well as the development of new materials and technology. Today, only one covered bridge survives in New Jersey. The Green Sergeant’s covered bridge in Hunterdon County was constructed over the Wickecheoke Creek in 1872 and has stood the test of time. New Jersey’s Covered Bridges showcases the rich transportation history of these structures and pictorially honors the lost ones.

Richard J. Garlipp Jr., a retired educator, has visited many covered bridges in New England and elsewhere. A New Jersey native, he collects photographs of covered bridges and is displaying them within the pages of New Jersey’s Covered Bridges.
