Held in the Jockey Club Amphitheatre at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts on Friday evening (21 March 2014), this year's presentation ceremony marks the 38th anniversary of the Awards' inception as an Asia Pacific design landmark and the second as a truly global industry event. The competition, which this year followed the theme of "THE DESIGN ISSUE," attracted more entries in more design disciplines than ever before.
The officiating guest at the event was the Hong Kong SAR Government Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory SO Kam-leung, GBS, JP.
"The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is committed to promoting Hong Kong as a creative city. The HKDA Global Design Awards brings local designs to the world and facilitates exchange among local designers and their overseas counterparts,"
"I am delighted that the Awards programme in 2013 received an overwhelming response, with more than 2,000 quality entries from 40 destinations around the world. The worldwide recognition of the Awards underscores the status of the event and the global design community's recognition of Hong Kong as Asia's creative capital," he said.
The Hong Kong Designers Association's mission is to advocate public interest in design and higher professional status for practising designers.
The main sponsor of this year's event was Create Hong Kong (CreateHK). The Awards are also recognised by the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda), and supported by over 20 associations, organisations, media and institutions from various sectors.
"This year's entries were simply outstanding, especially in the book and package sections of the Graphic category and the apps section of the New Media category. That made it more difficult than ever for the judges to pick a winner, which is a fantastic testament to the level of design talent we are seeing in Hong Kong, the region and around the world," said James Leung, Project Director of the HKDA Global Design Awards 2013.
The ceremony recognised the Gold Awards, the biggest prizes of the evening, and the Judges Choice Awards. The winners included:

"Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan, international city that has built an advantageous position as the gateway to China. And we are rapidly becoming something very special – a greater China design hub," said Mr Leung.
"The Hong Kong Designers Association is proud to be playing a role in this transformation. The success of events such as the Global Design Awards, which this year recognised hundreds of winners in an increasing variety of categories, prove that our faith in Hong Kong and its talented design professionals is well-founded,"
