Is it safe to eat bagels for brunch?

CHICAGO - March 23, 2014 - PRLog -- Ask most dentists whether eating a bagel is bad for your teeth and you’ll get an almost unanimous answer, no way but, according to one dentist some teeth have cracks in them and at any time you bite into something you can break a tooth.

It doesn’t matter what you are eating, says Mark Sawyer, DDS a dentist at Lakeshore Dental Associates. Most people think that when they get a filling in a tooth they are done with ever having to see a dentist about that tooth again. Anytime you have a filling in a tooth it can act like a wedge and cause a crack in the tooth. That can eventually cause the tooth to break. Sometimes you can be eating something soft like a bagel or even some soup and before you know it, you may need to see the dentist for some major work.

I have patients come into my office all the time with broken or chipped teeth telling me all the different kinds of food they were eating when they broke a tooth, from soup to nuts, or bagels, explains Dr. Sawyer. Sometimes there are symptoms of a cracked tooth, called cracked tooth syndrome but other times you may never know your tooth is cracked. So, there is one more reason to see your dentist regularly, just to make sure your next bite will be a safe one.
