his body swiftly declined until he was finally completely paralysed with no voice. But his mind remained untouched. He was trapped within his body. C. A. Warren-Howles witnessed first-hand the detrimental effects of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) after her father was diagnosed. After he lost the power of speech, she wanted to become his voice so that others could understand what goes on behind the closed doors of people in this situation. So The Silent Scream: Living with the Beast emphasises the sudden decline and death of her father, who shut himself away, embarrassed by how he may have been perceived. While other books about MND are written by the person suffering or by a witness to that pain, the author chose to write The Silent Scream from her father’s point of view. Using the backdrop of nature, something this man was dedicated to, the vileness of this disease is magnified as he is suddenly struck down and forced to suffer at its hands in isolation as he journeys through the last months of his life. The Silent Scream dramatises the silent, savage and true journey of one family, battling against a harsh disease that so rapidly rips away a person’s dignity. The author believes that people need to be made more aware of MND, and hopes this new book will achieve this. “This is the abrupt end to my father’s life. It is also a testament to the love my parents had for each other as they tried to fight ‘the Beast’ together until he finally had to let go. As I witnessed the fear and pain that he suffered as he fought to come to terms with his reality, I made a commitment to write about his experience,” Born in July 1958, C. A. Warren-Howles always wrote for school magazines. She worked for holistic arts magazine Cadeuceus, and has launched and written for a number of publications including Oxfordshire Living. She has had first-hand experience watching her father suffer with Motor Neurone Disease, for which there is no cure, and hopes to raise awareness of the disease through her first novel.
