Center for Health Innovation discusses the role of the Future Non-MD

Adelphi University hosts symposium on the changing landscape of medicine and healthcare

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - March 21, 2014 - PRLog -- Adelphi University Center for Health Innovation’s Spring Symposium topic is “The Role of the Future Non-MD.” The event will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2014 in the Ruth S. Harley University Center, Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom, from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Registration is free and open to classes and all members of the community. Light breakfast will be provided.

The annual symposium focuses on current issues affecting healthcare. This year will be a look at the role of the non-Medical Doctor in the future of medicine and patient care.

Inspired by the effects of the Affordable Care Act implemented and baby boomers and others aging/aging in place—the theme of the event explores the increased need for medical services while the availability of general practitioners has diminished. In light of these trends, the need for a non-M.D. medical professional to care for patients has become even more critical. The symposium’s panel discussions will key in on telehealth and the changing landscape of medical careers.

The keynote speaker for the event is William Toby Jr. M.S.W. ’63 who also holds a master’s degree in health administration from Harvard University and completed his undergraduate studies at West Virginia State University. Mr. Toby is the former regional administrator of the U.S. Health Care Financing Administration He is a well-known expert and sought-after speaker in health care.

Following Mr. Toby’s address will be a discussion on Telehealth featuring Lorraine Greene, RN, Telemonitoring Coordinator, Winthrop Hospital; Violet Bischoff, South Shore Home Health Services and Dr. Renee Pekmezaris of North Shore Long Island Jewish Systems. Assistant Professor and Department Chair of Nursing Foundations, Deborah Ambrosio-Mawhirter '81, M.S. '95, Ed.D., R.N. will moderate the panel on the Changing Landscape of Medical Careers. It will feature discussions by Dr. Patrick O'Shaughnessy, Chief Medical Officer, Catholic Health Services of Long Island; Bruce Zitkus, EdD, APRN, ANP-BC, FNP-BC, CDE President, Nurse Practitioner Association of Long Island and the Executive Director of the New York Alliance for Careers in Healthcare, Shawna Trager.
